Disclaimer – this is not a step by step guide on how to stop procrastinating. I don’t do those…
Instead, this is a look at the nature of thinking and how we can often get stuck in our own personal thinking. When we slow down and really choose not to believe every thought that enters our minds, we can begin to see the truth…which is, that we can do anything and everything we want to.
To do this requires us to get really present, and realise that the only thing that truly gets in the way of us doing something, is our thinking in the moment, about doing it.
I’ll repeat that one.
The only thing that truly gets in the way of us doing something, is our thinking in the moment, about doing it. And here’s the thing…we don’t need to do anything with that thinking other than see that it is for what it is…thought. Once we see that our thoughts aren’t any more real than an episode of Eastenders or Game of Thrones, we can drop them.
What do you do after you watch your favourite TV show?
You do whatever the hell you want. Although it feels real when you’re watching it, once you switch it off, it doesn’t have any bearing on your life because it’s not real to you. In the same way, our thoughts aren’t our truth. So, if you’re putting something off, and you want to stop standing in the middle of the road…
I invite you to start the thing you’re procrastinating against and just spend 5 minutes on it, no more. If after 5 minutes, you don’t want to do it anymore, stop. I think you’ll be surprised at what happens.
